IWAKUNI, Japan – Second grade students at M.C. Perry Primary recently brought their Social Studies learning to life with a hands-on, high-energy “Map Day” celebration. As part of their unit on geography and communities, students applied their knowledge of map features—like symbols, keys, and cardinal directions—to create detailed maps of the world around them.

From the familiar streets of the Atago family housing area to the layout of MCAS Iwakuni and even parts of Iwakuni township, students showcased their understanding of local geography through colorful, creative, and carefully labeled maps. Each map reflected not only what students have learned in class, but also their personal connections to the places they live, learn, and explore.

What made the day even more special? Families joined in the fun! Parents were invited into the cafeteria to support their young cartographers—offering guidance, sharing stories, and celebrating the learning process side by side. The room buzzed with collaboration, curiosity, and pride as students explained their map choices and pointed out landmarks that held meaning to them.

“Map Day” was more than just a project—it was a celebration of community, connection, and real-world learning. Students deepened their understanding of spatial awareness, practiced communication skills, and gained a greater appreciation for the places they call home.

This engaging event was made possible through the creativity and teamwork of the second grade teaching team: Mrs. Traci Crites, Ms. Arlinda Colar, Ms. Shanan Mason, Ms. Nelia Gil, and Mr. Marlon Pollock. Their dedication to hands-on, meaningful instruction continues to inspire students and families alike.

At M.C. Perry Primary, great things are happening every day—and “Map Day” was a shining example of how learning can be meaningful, memorable, and full of joy.
